The fear and worry send a ball of tension to the pit of your stomach, and your chest feels so tight that it is hard to breathe. If they don’t text back soon or can’t meet up, you automatically think, “are they talking to someone else?”, “don’t they like me anymore?”, “am I not a priority?” and jump to conclusions that are usually wrong. You start calling, texting, and reacting on impulse, which you later regret.

You feel an urgency to initiate contact to make plans or spend time together because if not, “they won’t do it,” and you hate depending on your partner for so much reassurance. You don’t want to keep being reactive to the anxiety, which can get to the point of “losing yourself” in the relationship or potentially self-sabotage.

My name is Lisaura, and as a clinical counselor and dance therapist, I help adults understand and heal from relational anxiety in their romantic partnerships. With compassion and curiosity, I can help you identify the pattern that plays out every time you perceive distance from your partner and understand what’s underneath it. 

An embodied therapy approach for relationship counseling in Chicago

Through individual relationship counseling, we will create a safe environment where you can practice listening to yourself, reconnect with body cues that hold valuable information about your emotional needs, and collaborate with your nervous system to re-learn how to calm down. 

During sessions, I will invite you to slow down and pay attention to what you are experiencing in your body as you share. Describing physical sensations will help organize what you are feeling and reconnect with what you need so you can communicate it effectively. 

Sometimes you’ll find no words to describe what you are feeling. Here I may suggest using symbolic movement to gain more insight into your experience. I will also invite you to incorporate movement sequences to regain a sense of grounding, stability, or greater expressivity and better manage the emotional overwhelm. 

Getting a clearer picture of your relationship style through individual relationship counseling in Chicago

We will also explore what you learned about relationships and emotions growing up. This will give us a clearer picture of the relational strategies you tend to use in your romantic partnerships today that are no longer effective. Identifying some of the beliefs and narratives from your childhood that you no longer want for yourself will help us gain insight into how to build the secure connections you are longing for.
